John's life in the visual arts started in the 1960s, aged 11 at Moseley School of Art, a specialist grammar school in Birmingham focused on combining academic and creative development. He went on to the linked Bournville College of Art. His first job was in design in television at ATV, before moving to London, where over a long career he built a successful public relations business and interests in design agencies.
Outside his business life he played a role in the re-emergence of the Royal British Society of Sculptors ( RBS) as an international force in contemporary sculpture, acting as an advisor to the Society during a key period of transformation, and serving as one of its first independent board members. He is an Honorary Fellow of the RBS.
A few years ago he returned to his roots and started to paint with a purpose. He paints in oils, inspired now by the Scottish Highlands where he lives in a hilltop steading that is both home and a painting and sculpture workshop.
He sees his paintings as narrative, connected to his writing, a joined creative process.
